Students currently enrolled in Mandarin I, II, III, and IV will visit the Yin Yu Tang House, located at the Peabody Essex Museum. This 18th-century Chinese house from Anhui province was relocated from its original village and re-erected in Salem, Massachusetts. Currently, it is the only example of a historic Chinese vernacular architectural construct in North America. The purpose of this field trip is to provide Chariho High School students currently studying Mandarin a unique opportunity to experience the most authentic local traditional Chinese house, and learn about Chinese art, architecture, and culture. Students will experience products and practices of Chinese cultures outside of the traditional classroom setting and make connections between the language and culture they study.
