Wu Ning (Ewa Makai Middle School, 2018-2019) and LeeAnn Manuel (Ewa Makai Middle School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Wu Ning and her mentor teacher LeeAnn Manuel received a CLP grant to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The celebration was part of the school’s project “Tiger Fest” – a day open to students and community members. On the day of the celebration, experiences including sampling of Chinese food such as dumplings and Tanyuan, trying traditional Chinese tea, making crafts including papercutting, Chinese knotting, lanterns, and hanging ornaments were all available to attendees. People who partook in the Tiger Fest also had the opportunity to try calligraphy by writing spring couplets and the Fu sign. During the celebration there was a display of students’ work and a performance for the audience, showing what the students have learned in Chinese class and club. Students taking Chinese classes also went to Chinatown to watch the New Year Parade and enjoy authentic Chinese food.

Shen Yan (Tonopah Valley High School, 2018-2019) and Michael Valdez (Tonopah Valley High School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant for a Chinese New Year Week. The event was held during Spring Festival. Chinese teacher organized the celebration of this festival with students, teachers, and parents from the U.S. host school. The Chinese New Year Week lasted for four days. Each day had a different topic for celebration. The first day there was papercutting demonstration. The seconds day was dedicated to a calligraphy workshop to create couplets. The third day dumplings were made by Shen Yan and her students for lunch. The fourth day there was an introduction to traditional Chinese sports. Twenty-one students helped Shen Yan to teach Chinese language and vocabulary related to the four days of activities to over 100 attendees.

Bao Qingmei (STEP Academy, 2018-2019) and Marwa Borghol (STEP Academy, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant for a Chinese Fair, in which students and faculty demonstrated what a traditional Chinese fair is like. There was food, snacks for sale, and Chinese dumpling tutorials. There was also an arts section where participants learned to write Chinese calligraphy, brush painting, papercutting, and how to paint a Peking Opera mask. In additional, there was a variety of performances such as a Chinese dance call guozhuang, Chinese children’s songs, and martial and Tai Chi performances. There was some traditional Chinese sports for participants to join in on, like shuttlecock and long rope jumping. There was prizes for those who did well in these activities.

Chen Ken (Moos Elementary School, 2018-2019) and Rafael Jimenez (Moos Elementary School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant to attend a Chinese New Year’s Parade on Sunday February 10, 2019. As part of the school's cultural learning, families visited Chinatown for the event. After the parade, students and families explored Chinatown and ate at a restaurant with food from the Sichuan Province. This learning impacted even more students with photographs and story sharing by the students who attened the trip during class.

Guo Jin received a CLP grant to help her start a sister city project between her host school and home school. The sister city project built upon the success of the Chinese Club at Suder Montessori Magnet School by allowing access to Chinese language and culture with more students. The grant was used to obtain Chinese resources for the students to have more firsthand contact with China. The resources included primary sources like books and newspapers, in addition to tools to support students with Chinese cooking, art, dance costumes, and field trips. Students were ultimately able to fundraise a trip to China during April vacation to meet students from Guo Jin’s home school, Deyang NO.5 Middle School, located in Jingyang, Deyang, Sichuan China. A follow up trip of Chinese students to Guo Jin’s U.S. host school was also planned to take place in October 2019.

Zou Feili (Bodine High School for International Affairs, 2018-2019) and Kasey Trapp (Bodine High School for International Affairs, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant to hold a "Lunar New Year Celebration." Through the project funds they organized an after-school event open to all students and faculty members at Bodine High School for International Affairs. The event was primarily organized and implemented by current Chinese 2 students. Close to 80 Chinese 2 students not only prepare for the event in learning more about Chinese language, culture, and history in the classroom, but they were also responsible for decorations, set-up of the event, and running each of the activity stations. The project was meant to enhance students' understanding of Mandarin through cultural connections and encourage a deeper connection with the language itself through culture. Over 100 students participated in the event. The Lunar New Year Celebration increased students' investment in continuing to take Mandarin, thereby further empowering them in the future to become successful in today's continuously globalizing world and the global market.

Bridget Veitch (LaSalle Language Academy, 2018-2019), Kong Yanli (LaSalle Language Academy, 2018-2019), and Wang Xia (LaSalle Language Academy, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant for LaSalle Language Academy to hold a Spring Festival Celebration to teach the students and parent community about the Chinese New Year. The Spring festival at LaSalle will include student performances, authentic Chinese performers, a raffle, and silent auction items. It served the dual purpose of starting a fundraising campaign to help finance a potential TCLP teacher for LaSalle for the 2019/20 school year. Almost all the students of Mandarin performed in the event, and they took pride in rehearsing and performing. Over 300 people attended and the event was successful in raising funds for the school to get a TCLP teacher in 2019-2020.

Zhao Xin (Plantation Middle School, 2018-2019) and Roxana Rivero-Taube (Plantation Middle School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant to hold a Chinese New Year Celebration for the students, teachers, parents, faculty, community members, and guests. From a series of activities, like lectures, assemblies, cross-culture fair, and Chinese Club, the people in the community will get a basic understanding and full engagement of Chinese Culture. The idea to spread the knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture, history, and traditions, as well as the language to the community at large in order to increase people's interest in Chinese culture and language learning. We will focus on the activities in Plantation Middle School as well as activities in elementary schools and high schools.

Roxana Rivero-Taube (Plantation Middle School, 2018-2019) and Zhao Xin (Plantation Middle School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant for a Chinese Reading Club for students, teachers, and faculty. From a series of reading activities (such as cross-cultural fair, language art classes, Chinese Club, and Chinese classes) the learners in the community received a basic understanding and engagement with Chinese culture. It was intended to increase people’s interest in Chinese culture and language learning. Some of the activities will continue yearly for the Chinese program. The focus of the activities at Plantation Middle School as well as hosting some activities at the high school will also encourage parent involvement.
