The theme of our capstone project is Culture boxes. And it is also our CLP. Both of my home school and host schools are willing to establish a sister-school relationship. Therefore, we plan to ask students and teachers to communicate with each other through a series of activities called culture boxes. For my host school, MBA really has a global vision and try to provide students as many opportunities as possible to broaden students’ horizon and mind because most students may not have the chances to know the outside world even the whole life. Therefore, they provide English, Spanish, French, Japanese as well as Mandarin. This language teaching process not only offers language learning process, but also about world culture. Students here need the authentic Chinese culture to help them understand the outside world so that they will be further motivated in growing up to achieve their future goals. For my home school, we have international classes and programs where students are focused on English learning and aim to come to the USA or Canada to continue high school or University. It’s a good opportunity for them to communicate with American students before they actually come here so that they can have a better understanding of American education. For teachers in both schools, we all have PLCs every week to learn the modern teaching methodologies and how to apply them into our teaching to achieve improvements, if we can set a time every month for language teachers to communicate teaching methodologies and education system, it will be very helpful for both Chinese teachers and American teachers in their professional development. Although I will only be in MBA for a year, MBA is really eager to keep the program consistent. MBA will not only have long-lasting sister-school relationship with my home school, MBA can also further develop this mode to establish sister-school relationship with the next Chinese exchange teacher’s home school. In this way, more opportunities will be provided for both students and teachers in MBA.

Butter lovers-(梁祝) also known as "China's Romeo and Juliet" is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers. The most popular love story in China tells the legend of two 4th century Chinese lovers who could not marry due to different family backgrounds. After the hero dies of a broken heart, the heroine leaps on his grave and the two turn into a butterfly couple after their deaths. For centuries, the story has been adapted into traditional operas, movies and TV plays. The Butterfly Lovers - Liang Zhu is an interdisciplinary Musical dance project that is simply an opportunity for students to come together and make art about what they learn from the Chinese story and how much they get inspired from the music. This project is a collaboration of students at Mesita 3rd grade Chinese class to create a musical performance, 4th grade art class to design and construct artwork; and 5th grade orchestra class for the original pieces of music. There are also other contributions from local artists and business owners in the El Paso area. They provided awesome resources like, photography and editing skills, and costumes to support the success of our performative event.

As I work in an IB school, there is tremendous focus on languages where Arabic is taught along with French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Yet, the school has no Arabic syllabus of its own; that is, no coursebook for teaching this language even though students – of all different levels – study it on a daily basis. This fact has arisen my interest to start this project that aims at starting to develop an Arabic syllabus that could be used by future teachers of Arabic at the school. It is an attempt to compile all the lessons that I have been conducting along with some other materials into one or more digital files. This could include lessons, worksheets, links to songs and videos to be used, flashcards and games. So, this proposed digital file could serve as a reference or coursebook for any future teacher of Arabic by which they would accompany this academic course.

My capstone is actually my CLP,which is a Chinese local fair.I had intended to hold it in March, but we had spring festival and too many snow days in February,so we didn't have enough time to get everything ready for it.And now we are busy with every detail to make sure it will be successfully held on April 26.So far, we have taken a field trip to MIA to help as many as possible students to have a general visual idea of what Chinese culture is like.Besides,I appointed 6 students to be directors of each section of the fair. They are responsible for food, calligraphy, dancing, martial arts, papercutting, sports. To make sure their sections will be popular, they are learning to dance, play Taichi and so on these days. And they have finished the posters and flyers for promoting their activities. Two weeks later, they will go on field trip to a Chinese buffet to learn about Chinese cuisines and learn to make dumplings.

My capstone project is having students experience Chinese culture in the Chinese community in Chicago. We have learnt a few lessons about Chinese food and Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, then we will take students to experience what they have learnt in the classroom personally. So we called this activity Cultural Immersion Chinatown.
