Adel Ghattas (2017-18) received a CLP grant to conduct a project designed to introduce his students to the history of the Middle East through a rich artistic context, engaging them with the language and culture in a fun way. Mr. Ghattas worked with the global history teacher at his school to prepare and present on the Arab-Israeli conflict. After students had learned about the historical and cultural background, they watched the movie The Band's Visit and participated in classroom activities that explored the movie's characters and themes. (The Band's Visit tells the story of an Egyptian Police Marching Band that becomes lost in Sinai and ends up in a remote town in Israel. There, they are hosted by an Israeli woman and spend the night with other Israelis. The film explores the tension that arises from the political conflict, as well as the human connections that form when individuals meet one other.) 34 students then attended a live performance of the musical on Broadway at the Barrymore Theater and ate at a Moroccan restaurant in New York City. The students who participated in the field trip then reflected on their experience and what they had learned through the project. They also prepared posters and presented about the musical to teachers, parents and colleagues at Lavelle's International Day, extending the impact of the project to include the wider community.

Ivy Yiu, mentor teacher at North Warren Regional, was awarded a CLP grant to take students enrolled in Chinese classes, as well as students in the Chinese club, on a field trip to Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Students who participated in the field trip then collaborated with Mrs. Yiu and the 2017-2018 exchange teacher Zhang Wenjie to plan a week-long Discover China! event held at the school in order to raise awareness and enthusiasm about Chinese language and culture and the North Warren Chinese program. Students then led "learning centers" at the event which provided their peers with the opportunity to learn about different elements of Chinese language and culture. Each day of the event had a particular focus, showcasing a variety of aspects of Chinese culture, history, and traditions throughout the course of the week. These themes, purposefully thought-out to highlight specific cultural lessons for the school community members to learn about, included the terracotta warriors, the Chinese New Year, the zodiac, calligraphy, paper cutting, paper lanterns, and using chopsticks. Having Chinese club members and students from Chinese language classes help facilitate the event and serve as cultural ambassadors helped increase student interest in enrollment in Chinese language classes and participation in the Chinese club. Many staff and teachers also attended the Discover China! event, increase the awareness of Chinese language and culture at the school.

Ji Guanping’s (2017-2019) project aimed to enhance students’ cross-cultural understanding and increase their interest in learning about Chinese language and culture. Activities included Chinese New Year poster making, Chinese calligraphy for decoration, appreciating artwork of China and other Asian countries, and trying Chinese food by ordering in the target language in an authentic Chinese restaurant. A culminating event was held simultaneously with parent/teacher conferences for the students to share their experiences and knowledge and celebrate the Chinese New Year. Through the project, not only students, but also their family members and friends learned about Chinese culture and traditions. Overall, 28 students, 12 teachers, and 55 parents benefited from this project and expanded their cultural appreciation of China and awareness of the Mandarin program at STEP. Guanping’s principal and board members were impressed by the project and are excited for the continuing the Mandarin Chinese program in the future.

TCLP teacher Zhu Xiaohong collaborated with the Philadelphia World Affairs Council to take 45 students to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and then to Philadelphia’s Chinatown to experience authentic Chinese food and Lunar New Year festival activities. Prior to the field trip, students learned new vocabulary and content relating to Chinese art, food, and festivals, highlighting the connection between Chinese language and culture.During the field trip, students participated in an hour long Chinese art lesson at the museum, led by one of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s student educators. The lesson taught students about the pieces of art in the Chinese collection at the museum, connecting the artwork to the history and culture of China. During the restaurant visit, students practiced the Chinese table manners that they learned in class and confidently spoke to the restaurant staff in Mandarin Chinese to say please, thank you, etc. Xiaohong conducted impromptu lessons at the restaurant when she saw opportunities to teach students new vocabulary, phrases, or something about Chinese culture that they were seeing or experiencing in the restaurant. These trips not only strengthened students’ skills and interest in taking Mandarin as a foreign language, but also allowed them to experience a foreign culture in a fun, stimulating way that many had never had the opportunity to before.

TCLP Alumni from around the world met for a two-day virtual conference on Alumni Cooperation. Each day included engaging presentations on collaborative alumni projects. TCLP alumna Tan Lihua received a Critical Language Project grant to hold Chinese Culture Stations at three high schools in Rock Hill, South Carolina. These Chinese Culture Stations were a Mid-autumn Festival Celebration, a calligraphy demonstration, a traditional clothes show, and an International Festival. Students also had the opportunity to learn about other aspects of traditional Chinese culture, such as games, food, classic novels, and tea culture, as well as to practice Chinese language skills.These events allowed current Mandarin students to showcase their knowledge and inspired other students in the district to study Mandarin. More than 80 students participated in these events and enrollment in the Chinese program increased 40%.

The project will help students get introduced to Ancient Egyptian history. Students will visit the planetarium to see how astronomers in Ancient Egypt made the solar calendar and how they told time by stars. They will also explore temples and tombs of the ancient world through the hall of ancient Egypt exhibit. They will learn about mummification and the advanced scientific methods to study mummies through the mummies of the world exhibit. They will delve into cultural practices and clothing of the ancient Egyptians. During cultural comparison activities students will use Arabic vocabulary which will improve their reading and their writing skills.

Madison East High School and Plymouth High School co-hosted TCLP teacher, Mahmoud Hegazy, for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year. Both high schools previously hosted TCLP teachers for Arabic and continued their programs through facilitated language class where students study an Arabic curriculum independently, participate in weekly skype sessions from university tutors, and communicate with local Arabic speakers. In order to generate further enthusiasm for both programs the school developed a unique schedule for Mr. Hegazy that gave each class individual time with him. Mr. Hegazy stayed primarily in Madison and traveled to Plymouth for one week each month. This CLP made it possible for Mahmoud to travel and teach at Plymouth.

Ms. Hamed will organize activities at Highland Middle School around the story of Aladdin using a comparison of eastern and western interpretations in order to build cultural awareness and mutual understanding. As part of the activities she will lead a field trip for students to the Broadway show of Aladdin in New York City. After watching this interpretation of the story, students will watch a movie representing the eastern version of the story. Students will write a review on the show and movie both in Arabic and in English. Students will sit together and decide what part of the story they will act to show the differences between the two versions.   The students will act the scene out for parents at an event called Aladdin Night. This event will be designed to introduce more information about Middle Eastern culture, customs, and food. Students will also design advertisements for the event. They will serve food and tell parents about the different traditional ingredients. Ms. Hamed has developed this project to increase the knowledge and awareness of Arabic cultures and customs, as well as to increase support and enthusiasm for the Arabic program at Highland.

Mr. El-Dwiny, along with the faculty and staff at John W. Lavelle Preparatory Charter School, will host an international festival with an emphasis on the Arabic world. Mr. El-Dwiny plans for the festival to provide cross-cultural outreach to students, parents, the community, principals from other schools and local media. He and his students will organize exhibitions on Arabic culture and history, a fashion show of Arabic clothes, music, and videos showing Arabic and Middle East culture. There will also be talks on the importance of studying Arabic from the principals of the school, his mentor teacher, himself and his Arabic students. The festival will include Arabic food, writings in Arabic for the audience, and other activities. The Arabic students will perform a play in Arabic as well as sing songs in Arabic. They will teach other students Arabic vocabulary during the day.   Mr. El-Dwiny’s Arabic students will also take part in an innovative effort to engage students a Lavelle with Arabic culture through popular Arabic music. Prior to the festival event, the Arabic students will study the music of the Middle East with the world renowned New York Arabic Orchestra. Over the span of six weeks, music teachers will work with the students, strengthening their Arab language skills through lessons on musical instruments and the history of Arab music. Then on the day of the festival, the students will have a recital before their family, friends, and peers. The Arabic International Festival will support the school's goal of bringing awareness about the importance of studying Arabic to the community at large. This project also intends to encourage understanding among diverse cultures and to motivate students to study Arabic as well as to increase the number of the students who want to study Arabic.
