My capstone project is the Chinese New Year Guard Rally. The purpose of this event is to enable students to experience Chinese traditional culture more deeply and be interested in learning Chinese. The event is arranged on the day before the Chinese New Year, which is New Year ’s Eve. We performed three times during the day so that all the teachers and students of the school have the chance to take part in this event. The first is for pre-k to second grade students, the second is for third to fifth grades, and the third is for sixth to ninth grades. Each performance takes 45 minutes, including Chinese songs, shadow puppet shows, Tai Chi, and handicrafts shows. The students participating in the performance come from different grades. Fine art teachers offered great support before and during this events.

A grand Chinese New Year celebration was held in Plantation Middle School during Chinese New Year. The students and staff in our school and feeder schools and the officials from our county were invited to spend the wonderful afternoon with my Chinese students who well performed the Chinese-styled programs and showed their projects about Chinese culture. Some students from feeder schools also sang Chinese songs which I taught them during outreach. This capstone arouses people's interest in China and Chinese culture and establishes mutual understanding among different peoples.

Most People in the valley do not know anything about the TCLP or the Arabic class. I had a year long plan to showcase the program and the Arabic language and culture to everyone in the valley. Accordingly, I followed a plan that included many actions and events: First, I created collaborative classes with other teachers to raise awareness for students at my school. So, I planned different outreaches: 1- An outreach with Cosmetology teacher in which I introduced the history of cosmetics in Egypt. 2- An outreach with the forensic science teacher on the mummification process in ancient Egypt. 3- Two outreaches in the library that introduced The Hijri year and the Tanura Dance tradition. 4- An outreach teaching students the origin of papyrus and how it was made in ancient Egypt. 5- A cooking event in which I collaborated with the food science teacher and taught students how to cook two different Arabian dishes. The event included a fashion show in which the students displayed traditional Egyptian clothing. It also included a belly dance show and the school orchestra played an Arabian piece of music. 6- My extended outreach that was a series of presentations in Spanish classes to introduce the similarities between ancient Egypt and ancient Mexico. Also, they could identify the similarities between Arabic and Spanish Languages. Other outreaches were held at different classes for the sake of raising the awareness of studying new Arabic language and learning about different cultures. Secondly: I created the Arabic Club in which I ran different events for people from the community. In my club, I introduced the program, the culture and the Arabic language. It was for other members in the community. I planed to make it for all people, students or parents or others. This Club reached people outside school. Meetings were held in different places every time. Some students helped me with it. I introduced sessions about Arabic Language and Egyptian culture. some topics included: food, clothing, history, inventions and other topics related to Arab and Egyptian Culture. Thirdly: I conducted a series of school visits to introduce the program to students from other feeder schools. It included visits to high, middle and lower schools. Fourthly: I get my class involved in two projects: A museum at the end of the fist semester, and a display during the second semester. Both projects enabled all of the school students and teachers to explore the history and culture of Egypt. I was planning through the Arabic club to raise awareness and advertise the program. Finally our school participated in the international week. Students made different presentations on: The Arabic language, ancient and modern Egypt, Inventions and other projects. We had the chance to win a trophy for the best high school participation in the international week.

This project is to create a shared resource space to help the teachers, students and school community appreciate the diversity that is within our cultures, while recognizing we all have shared commonalities. The project could foster a multicultural library for our school- providing resources across themes of various texts that are represented across languages, culture folktales and representative of modalities of storytelling- books, videos, songs, holidays, etc. We could offer the entire school community access to texts across languages and various resources to represent the cultures of our school. We include songs, videos, movies and create various clubs that utilize the materials- world cultures club- allowing students to be exposed to different cultures and learning about the mandarin culture.

When I arrived in Leicester Middle school, I went to the library looking for Arabic books or Arabic instructional Aids to help me in creating my lesson plans. I found none. The school has a large library but no Arabic books, bilingual dictionaries or books for teaching or learning Arabic as a foreign language. My idea is to establish an Arabic corner for students and staff members who want to know more about the Arabic language and culture. After a few months, I noticed that students and teachers in the school are avid readers. They read book from different genres. To become curious about a language, you can start by reading translated novels that are a representative of the variety of genres in the literature of that language. Therefore, I decided to supply the library with books for learning the language such as books for teaching the alphabet, bilingual dictionaries, books for improving handwriting both Naskh and Reqaa, and some short stories in Arabic, plus a number of Egyptian famous novels and comics that are translated from Arabic to English.

Butter lovers-(梁祝) also known as "China's Romeo and Juliet" is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers. The most popular love story in China tells the legend of two 4th century Chinese lovers who could not marry due to different family backgrounds. After the hero dies of a broken heart, the heroine leaps on his grave and the two turn into a butterfly couple after their deaths. For centuries, the story has been adapted into traditional operas, movies and TV plays. The Butterfly Lovers - Liang Zhu is an interdisciplinary Musical dance project that is simply an opportunity for students to come together and make art about what they learn from the Chinese story and how much they get inspired from the music. This project is a collaboration of students at Mesita 3rd grade Chinese class to create a musical performance, 4th grade art class to design and construct artwork; and 5th grade orchestra class for the original pieces of music. There are also other contributions from local artists and business owners in the El Paso area. They provided awesome resources like, photography and editing skills, and costumes to support the success of our performative event.

My project is divided into two parts: Chinese New Year Gala and Chinese New Year Food which takes place on Feb.7 and Feb 10. The Chinese New Year Gala consists of 9 performances where I include the most typical Chinese cultural elements and demonstrate students’ Chinese language skills at the same time. For the food part, I ordered authentic Chinese food in the restaurant and invite teachers and students to share the food. With posters presenting what food would be seen on the dinner table in China during this festive occasion and what symbolic meaning each food item has, the participants definitely have a clearer picture of the festival and helps to trigger their passion about Chinese culture. Word spread about my gala and people talk about it for a long time. They’ve never had this kind of performance before and the first year of this kind of show in the history of World Language Department really gives it a special touch and people are super impressed.
