Anand Sukumaran

Bio
Anand Sukumaran is originally from Penang, Malaysia. He received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in music education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. He is currently the band director and music teacher at Mary Gage Peterson School, a position he has held since 2006. Anand teaches band, piano, guitar and songwriting at Peterson. One of his passions is inspiring creativity in young people, encouraging them to compose their own music. Anand is a recipient of the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence and is currently enjoying a sabbatical at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Anand became a teacher to create opportunities for musical success. His sincere hope is through him, music would be a powerful voice for young people; that through creating and performing music, they would understand themselves and others. Anand has been teaching for close to nine years now. Mr. Sukumaran was the mentor teacher for Samar Abdelfatah from Giza, Egypt.
