NORWALK -- For the first time in its 48-year history, Roton Middle School will offer a class in Chinese this fall. The class will be taught by a native of China, who recently step foot on American soil for the first time. Roton's newest teacher, Wei Wei, comes to Connecticut from Lanzhou City, which is in the northwest part of China. In China, she teaches English at the renowned High School Attached to Northwest Normal University.
In June, Roton Middle School was awarded the opportunity to host Wei for one year by the Teachers of Critical Languages Program, a program designed to increase the study of world languages in U.S. schools. The program enables primary and secondary schools to strengthen their teaching of Mandarin and Arabic by bringing Chinese and Egyptian teachers to the U.S. to teach their native languages and culture for an academic year.
