Mandarin cooking club

Host School

The students in Haven elementary school who join the after-school activity(21 century) will be the

participant in the Mandarin cooking club. I would like to have some tasting activity, read the recipe

and make the cuisines, compare foods in different countries and discuss about the diversity about

different cultures and eating habit. The project will take place in my classroom on every Tuesday

from 4 to 6. Food is the fastest way to connect people together. If the students enjoy the activities

Field Trip to Chinatown

Before Lunar New Year, students will learn different aspects of the Lunar New Year, such as stories and legends, traditions, food, clothing, phrases, and entertainment. The teacher will encourage students to share these ideas with family members. Families will go on a field trip to Chinatown during the Lunar New Year to experience dining with chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant and enjoy a Lunar New Year parade afterward.

Taiwan and Mandarin Fair

The capstone project will be incorporated with the annual Chinese New Year events next year in 2023. It will be a fair open to the community that welcome all the community members to enjoy various fun activities involving Mandarin and Taiwanese culture. There will be popular Taiwanese food such as Boba Tea, Taiwanese fried chicken, potstickers and scallion pancakes…etc. People may need to pass a Trivia about Taiwan to get tickets for food, or they can try to order food in Mandarin!

Spring Festival Exhibition

Festivals are the important part of the culture. Spring Festival is the most important festival in China and there are a lot of customs that helps the students learn more about the Chinese and Chinese culture. There are three sections about the project. Before the Spring Festival, students learn why the Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival and how the Chinese people celebrate it.

Chinese New Year Celebration: A field trip to Chinatown

The project will be made of two parts. First before the festival, students will learn about the tradition of Spring Festival and how Chinese people celebrate it. They will make crafts in preparation of the festival, like paper-cutting, lanterns and couplets, to decorate the classroom and a Chinese culture bulletin board. They will also learn about Chinese food and practice how to use chopsticks. Then on Chinese New Year, the students and parents will make a fieldtrip by bus to the Chinatown in downtown Chicago.

Sister Partnership Between West Park Academy and Xinjin Experimental Primary School

Host School

The students are going to be pen pals between my host school in Chicago, Illinois and my home school in China. In order to experience Chinese culture, the students who participate in the pen pal activity in America are going to Chinatown in downtown Chicago in April as a field trip.
