Thanks to the previous TCLP, Irving Elementary School has now an Arabic corner at the school library. I noticed that the addition of a curriculum with a record of the lessons and activities students are exposed to this year will be very beneficial, especially to future TCLPs. My capstone project is based on expanding the Arabic corner to include additional Arabic language learning books. Examples of those books are: Visual Arabic English; Al Arabiya Bayna Ydayka 1 and 2; Attakallom; Arabic Character Writing – Dummies; Salamat: learning Arabic with Ease; Arabic in Flash; Arabic Alphabet Flash Cards; Arabic stories for Language learners; Let’s Talk Arabic; Arabic for Bebinners, Arabic for Everyday Use. in addition to this, a 10 units curriculum Has been suggested to be a reference for future Arabic teachers at Irving School. Units will cover topics such as family, food and drinks, sport and holidays. The following is a chart that introduces the different units. As I work in an IB school, there is a tremendous focus on languages where Arabic is taught along with French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Yet, the school has no Arabic syllabus of its own; that is, no coursebook for teaching this language even though students – of all different levels – study it on a daily basis. This fact has arisen my interest to start this project that aims at starting to develop an Arabic syllabus that could be used by future teachers of Arabic at the school. It is an attempt to compile all the lessons that I have been conducting along with some other materials into one or more digital files. This could include lessons, worksheets, links to songs and videos to be used, flashcards and games. So, this proposed digital file could serve as a reference or coursebook for any future teacher of Arabic by which they will be equipped all through the academic year. The digital file is composed of eight units that I have been working on throughout the school year in addition to a resource bank file that includes all the supplementary materials. These supplementary materials are in the form of videos, links, and other resources such as books. They are all for the sake of providing further reference for prospective teachers of Arabic at the IB school I am currently working at.

My capstone project is the Arabic club and Arab culture. I announced at my host school that there will be Arabic club in which students of different classes will join it and learn Arabic through different fun activities, moreover, they will learn about the Egyptian culture as there are too many items that are related to the Egyptian cultures such as Egyptian clothing, pharaohs masks and papyrus and there are also some language games.

This is the first year of the program in Leicester Middle school. There were no materials, books, lesson plans or instructional aids that could help me create lesson plans for my students. My idea is to create an Arabic Curriculum for level 1 that includes instructional calendar, classroom expectations, lesson plans, ppt presentations, Flashcards, online resources and ideas for traditional and online games. In addition, there will be assessment methods such as quizzes and tests aligned with the goals of the curriculum. I will leave both a hard copy and an electronic copy.

When I arrived in Leicester Middle school, I went to the library looking for Arabic books or Arabic instructional Aids to help me in creating my lesson plans. I found none. The school has a large library but no Arabic books, bilingual dictionaries or books for teaching or learning Arabic as a foreign language. My idea is to establish an Arabic corner for students and staff members who want to know more about the Arabic language and culture. After a few months, I noticed that students and teachers in the school are avid readers. They read book from different genres. To become curious about a language, you can start by reading translated novels that are a representative of the variety of genres in the literature of that language. Therefore, I decided to supply the library with books for learning the language such as books for teaching the alphabet, bilingual dictionaries, books for improving handwriting both Naskh and Reqaa, and some short stories in Arabic, plus a number of Egyptian famous novels and comics that are translated from Arabic to English.

With a twist on multiple intelligences, my capstone project will allow students to contribute student-selected projects that will be showcased during Faust's First Annual Chinese Celebration. Students will be given a list of small projects they can choose from, individually or in a small group, that peaks their interests, builds on their specific intelligence and showcases Chinese Language and culture. The goal is to invite the entire school community to Chinese Celebration to participate in the event.

Since there is a very effective and successful Arabic program in my school, I needed something new that attracts more students and give them real experiences that land them on the Arab world. I thought of the idea of creating an Arab club which is responsible for everything relates to the Arab culture. In this club we offer materials such as: books, clothes, jewelry, perfumes, pottery, accessories, paintings...etc that tell us many things about the Arabs and their lives. All of these things are with a full description and details about its history and why and how it is used. This club also provides some educational materials like: stories and movies that encourage students to learn without even noticing that they are learning. this club is also open for all not only Arabic language learners. All are welcome. I also worked on some curriculum development through giving more handouts and sheets to apply more strategies in the lessons given.
