Before and during Lunar New Year, students learned different aspects of the Lunar New Year, such as stories and legends, traditions, food, clothing, phrases, and entertainment. The teacher gave out wordlists and red envelops, and encouraged students to share these cultures with family members. The project ends with the families joining the teacher to make a traditional Lunar New Year dessert - fā gāo.
Throughout the project, the participants experienced the traditions for different days of Lunar New Year, including Lunar New Year’s Eve. The participants understand that in Mandarin speaking cluture, Lunar New Year is highly family-oriented, and people will do all sorts of things (traditions) to pray for a good start of new year, which symbolizes good luck and prosperous.
