Chinese Exhibition Show

This CLP, awarded to Li Jing (2017-2018) supported Nasalle Grays River Valley School's Chinese Exhibition Show on February 24, 2018. The show was open to parents and community members and featured three parts. Students learning Mandarin at the school performed traditional Chinese dances, including a fan dance, ribbon dance, and lantern dance, all set to Chinese songs. The second part of the show had an exhibition of students’ work from the 4th and 5th grades, including students’ calligraphy, drawing, crafts and research about China.

Chinese Art and Food Appreciation

Ji Guanping’s (2017-2019) project aimed to enhance students’ cross-cultural understanding and increase their interest in learning about Chinese language and culture. Activities included Chinese New Year poster making, Chinese calligraphy for decoration, appreciating artwork of China and other Asian countries, and trying Chinese food by ordering in the target language in an authentic Chinese restaurant. A culminating event was held simultaneously with parent/teacher conferences for the students to share their experiences and knowledge and celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Chinese Culture Day

TCLP alumna Tan Lihua received a Critical Language Project grant to hold Chinese Culture Stations at three high schools in Rock Hill, South Carolina. These Chinese Culture Stations were a Mid-autumn Festival Celebration, a calligraphy demonstration, a traditional clothes show, and an International Festival.

Spring Festival at Captain Nathan Hale

TCLP mentor teacher Deborah Page and exchange teacher Gu Wenming will organize a celebration of the Spring Festival at Captain Nathan Hale Middle School. The event will involve students in Mr. Gu’s Mandarin classes, students who participate in the Chinese Enrichment Club, and other students in related arts classes and culinary clases. Students from the nearby High School and pre-school will all be invited to attend. The event will focus on Chinese culture and language and students will take part in Chinese songs, dances, and performances.

Chinese Spring Festival Celebration Event

Ms. Ji, along with her colleagues, will organize a Chinese Spring Festival Celebration Event for Naselle-Grays River Valley School’s Mandarin Immersion Program. The celebration looks to generate even greater interest in the program from students and parents. Chinese New Year and Temple Fair Event

Tan Jin, former TCLP Exchange Teacher, was awarded a CLP grant to support her efforts organizing and conducting the annual Chinese New Year Event at Naselle Grays River Valley School. This year, the event was combined with celebrations for the Chinese Spring Festival Temple Fair. The whole community and outlying areas were invited to this event. Guests enjoyed authentic Chinese food, traditional games, sports, art projects, and the lion dance. Additionally, Tan Jin continued to build awareness of Chinese culture and Mandarin language through her after-school club.

Chinese New Year Celebration

Sophia Griffies was awarded a grant on behalf of Audubon Charter School in New Orleans, which began their new Mandarin program by hosting TCLP Chinese exchange teachers during the 2013 and 2014 school years. Through the CLP funds the school hosted a Chinese New Year celebration in 2015 for families and community members. The event showcased Chinese language and culture and included Chinese decorations, a student parade and Chinese dance performance, and tents featuring Chinese food tastings, art, and music.

Chinese New Year Festival and Chinese Language Club

Mentor teacher Lisa Giblin at Winton Woods Intermediate School in Cincinnati, OH worked with TCLP Chinese teacher Gong Hongling on a Chinese New Year Festival and Chinese Language Club project. The Chinese Festival promoted many aspects of Chinese culture and language to the community, and included traditional games, dances, Chinese riddles, calligraphy practice, food sampling, and information about Chinese language education and opportunities. The Winton Woods community was invited to participate and over 200 students, parents, and community members attended.

Spring Festival Event

TCLP Chinese teacher Cao Yanna will organize project at Indian River Charter School in Vero Beach, Florida with the support of the Indian River students and faculty. This Spring Festival Event includes multiple components aimed at providing students with an opportunity to practice their Chinese skills in real-life language situations and share what they have learned with their families, teachers, and classmates while also exposing other community members to Chinese culture and increasing interest in the Chinese program at Indian River Charter School.
