Bridget Veitch received a CLP grant to assist with the hosting of the Spring Festival at LaSalle Language Academy in Chicago, Illinois. The Festival will build community support for the Mandarin program at the school. The objectives of the evening are that the performing guests will educate parents about Chinese traditions, and the student presentations will showcase how much they have learned in Chinese language and culture class. A short term goal for the project is that it will enable parents to experience the successes of the current program by seeing how their children have been positively impacted by it.

Cui Yi (2017-2018) was awarded a CLP grant to help her host the Chinese Culture Festival at Suder Montessori in Chicago, Illinois. This will be an opportunity for students to showcase their work and for parents and community members to see the positive impact the Mandarin program has on their school. The festival activities will focus on the traditions of the Chinese Spring Festival and utilize musical and art performances by students, as well as classroom activities to highlight the progress students have made throughout the year.

This CLP, awarded to Li JIng (2017-2018) is designed to support Nasalle Grays River Valley School's Chinese Exhibition Show. The show will be open to parents and community members and will feature three parts. Students learning Mandarin at the school will first performances traditional Chinese dances, including a fan dance, ribbon dance, and lantern dance, all set to Chinese songs. The second part of the show will be an exhibition of students’ work,including students’ calligraphy, drawing, crafts and researches about China. Finally, the evening will end with students' sharing what they have learned about Chinese food and sampling traditional Chinese dumplings made by students and parents at the school.

Ivy Yiu, mentor teacher at North Warren Regional, won a CLP grant for students enrolled in Chinese 1 classes to attend a field trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to see the Terracotta Warriors Exhibit. Upon returning from the trip, students will research the history of this part of Chinese history and develop a presentation to share with the entire school community. The presentation will be made available for the entire student community during unit lunch. Students will also utilize the augmented reality app available from the Franklin Institute for other students and attendees who could not join the field trip and utilize technology to view the Terracotta Warriors. The presentation will be conducted using "centers". Attendees will have the opportunity to lean about the Chinese language, practice speaking phrases, create their own Chinese names, practice Chinese calligraphy brush writing and learn to read the characters. The augmented reality viewing will be another activity center. The scope of the project will be expanded to include local elementary and middle schools as permissions for visits are received.
