Students are introduced to the phonetic system of modern standard Mandarin Chinese, including pin yin, transliteration, and tones.  Students develop skills in listening and speaking, reading and writing.  Students read and write 300 Chinese characters.

Students will be able to state time, date, gender, simple commands. Students’ writing skills will not be developed.  Students will comprehend the teacher’s simple commands, understand the symbolic meanings of certain Chinese characters and some social meaning of colors.  Students will identify Spring festival and Christmas, Chinese zodiac of years and Western constellation of months, they will develop some taste and appreciation for Chinese folk songs, rap music, paintings and calligraphy, cuisines, ancient poetry, grammar and sentence structures in Chinese language and English language. They will be able to connect with science and math [constellation, counting]: with music and art, with cooking and also with English class.
