Wang Ling received a CLP grant to build a sister school relationship between her host school in Rhode Island, Chariho Regional High School, and her home school in China, No.1 High School of Liuyang. The main goals of the project are to coordinate regular virtual exchanges for students at both schools, offer professional development opportunities for teachers in the U.S. and China to share best practices, establish exchange programs for Chinese students to study at Chariho Regional High School as international students for U.S. students to study at No.1 High School of Liuyang or to volunteer, and to establish a Chinese language and culture classroom at Chariho Regional High School. Students at the host and home schools have already connected through virtual exchanges and will continue to connect though art exchanges, speech competitions, and other virtual activities. The principals of both schools have met through video conferences and the principal of Chariho Regional High School will visit No.1 High School of Liuyang in June 2019. This CLP will support language learning and cultural exchange between students, teachers, and administrators at the host and home schools.

Kong Yanli received a CLP grant to build a sister school relationship between her home school in China, Yichang Foreign Language Junior High School and Nettlehorst Elementary in Chicago, Illinois, which is in the same district as her host school in the US. The relationship started with a pen-pal program, joint-classroom projects, the establishment of a Chinese Club at Nettlehorst Elementary, and will develop into an in-person, student exchange. The visit to the U.S. will take place in the summer for about two weeks as a summer camp. As a result of this CLP, the schools hope to have a yearly visit to the U.S. and eventually have the opportunity for American students to visit Kong Yanli’s students in China.

Guo Jin (Suder Montessori Magnet Elementary School, 2018-2019) received a CLP grant for a sister city project. The sister city project will extend the success of the Chinese Club at Suder Montessori Magnet School by allowing access to Chinese language and culture with more students. The grant will be used to obtain Chinese resources for the students to have more firsthand contact with China. The resources will include primary sources like books and newspapers, in addition to tools to support students with Chinese cooking, art, dance costumes, and field trips.

Ezzat Hassan (2015-2016) will be leading a field trip for students at his home school, Gesfa Secondary School for Girls, to Cairo to visit sites of cultural and historical interest. During this field trip, students will have the opportunity to practice English in a particular context. Prior to the field trip, students will have the opportunity to learn about American culture through webinars held by teachers at Ezzat's host school, Mentor High School. Following the field trip, Egyptian students will share their experiences on the trip with students in Arabic classes at Mentor.

  Shi Cuilian (2016-2017), with assistance from Development Director Jennifer Hughes, will hold a Dragon Boat Festival at the Learning Community Charter School (LCCS) in New Jersey this spring. This event will give students and parents the opportunity to expand, broaden, and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture and language. The festival will incorporate music, dance performances, arts, crafts, and food. Leading up to the event, fourth grade students will study a unit about the Dragon Boat Festival and its inspiration, poet Qu Yuan, and will collaborate with students from a school in Tianjin, China. The LCCS 4th Grade students will spend part of May creating projects about Qu Yuan while the Chinese student participants will create corresponding works about a noteworthy American poet. As part of the festival, LCCS will present their Qu Yuan projects and display those made by their Chinese peers. The LCCS Dragon Boat Festival project will culminate in a field trip for current Chinese language students.

As part of a cross-cultural Critical Language Project, TCLP Teacher Tamer Elsharkawy and his students explored Alexandria, Virginia. His students shared what they learned about Alexandria, Virginia with students in Egypt and in turn, students in Egypt shared what they learned from a field trip to Alexandria, Egypt. Both groups of students practiced their target languages of Arabic and English through the project.

  TCLP exchange teacher Chen Manman received a CLP grant to establish Culture Corners at her U.S. host school in Massachusetts, Walsh Middle School, and her home school, Nanjing Foreign Language School Xianlin Campus. Each school established a wish list of authentic learning materials based on their needs and sent the requested resources to each other to begin the set up of the Culture Corner. Ms. Chen hopes that the two schools can maintain communication through the culture corners by conducting joint activities each year. The collaborative partnership will continue over time to provide additional materials to enhance the spread of understanding of each culture and language.   As part of this project, Walsh Middle School held an opening ceremony to introduce this new resource to the student body. Students enrolled in Ms. Chen's Mandarin class prepared posters and booths with different cultural themes using the materials that they received for the Chinese Culture Corner from Ms. Chen's school in China. Other classes from the school attended the opening ceremony and learned about Chinese toys, paper cutting, calligraphy, traditional clothing, books, and how to use chopsticks. Students also prepared short videos of what they learned in their Chinese classes to share with visiting classes. More than 300 students attended the opening ceremony and learned more about Chinese language and culture. In addition, more than 8,000 Chinese students and teachers will benefit from the books and materials that Walsh Middle School sent to Nanjing Foreign Language School Xianlin Campus.

 The 3rd Annual TCLP Virtual Alumni Training Conference took place on February 24 and February 25, 2016   Alumni from China, Egypt, and the United States met for a two-day virtual conference on developing and delivering trainings for students and peers. Each day included presentations and scheduled time for Q&A.   The featured presentations were conducted by TCLP Alumni  Wednesday, February 24, 2016: Peer/Teacher Training TCLP alumni Chen Jinyun and Mohamed Mehanny (2013-2014) discussed how they have used their experiences from their time in the United States to develop and deliver trainings to their colleagues in China and Egypt.  Thursday, February 25, 2016: Student Training TCLP alumni Mohamed Hassan and Fu Ailing (2011-2012) discussed how they have used their TCLP experiences to develop unique student trainings after returning to China and Egypt.   Each day, the sessions lasted for an hour and included speaker presentations and group discussion.   TCLP Arabic Teacher, Hanan Gawdet, received a Critical Language Project Grant to give Southern Lehigh Arabic students from 7th -12th grade an opportunity to focus on “Ancient and Modern Egyptian Arts.”   First, the students (in 7th to 12th grades) studied and presented to the class in Arabic on Islamic Art, Ancient Egypt, and different cultures in the Arab world. This prepared the students for the class field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, funded by the CLP, where they did further research on related subjects. At the museum, the students were provided with a check list of scavenger hunt questions to answer for their class. Simultaneously, Ms. Gawdat’s class in Egypt took a virtual museum tour in Egypt via Skype, which allowed the them to learn about topics similar to her U.S. students. The Egyptian and American students shared what they had learned with each other using Skype.   After the field trip, the students shared information via a Power Point presentation with Arabic subtitles, photos, and video of their experience at a school assembly. In art classes, the American students also created Egyptian Sculptures and made a giant tapestry using Arabic and Islamic Art pictures that was hung at the entrance to the school.

  TCLP alumna teacher Li Qiong was awarded a Critical Language Project grant to conduct a sister school exchange project with Sonoran Trails Middle School in August 2015. This project was completed in conjunction with Cristina Ladas, the school’s World Language Coordinator. Twenty students from Ms. Li’s school visited the school in order to strengthen the sister school relationship and share Chinese language and culture. This visit coincided with the opening ceremony for the host school’s Chinese Language and Culture Club, which featured cultural performances and a ping pong tournament.
